Aviation English
In order to improve safety ICAO has recognised the importance of good
communication between pilots and air traffic controllers. English has been
highlighted as the means of communication.
ICAO’s Language Proficiency
- It will be a condition of licensing that the professional pilot or air traffic controller should be able to demonstrate their proficiency in plain English and English medium phraseology to a standard equivalent to level 4 in ICAO universal rating scales.
- The level of the candidate above level 4 will be shown by an endorsement on the flying or air traffic control licence.
ICAO PROFICIENCY LEVEL 4
To achieve ICAO Level 4 candidates must be able to demonstrate the following performance descriptors in the six categories of:
· Pronunciation
· Structure
· Vocabulary
· Fluency
· Comprehension (Aural)
· Interaction
COURSE OVERVIEW
The course will take place at the client’s premises. The focus is on speaking and listening skills especially in “plain” English in an aviation context.
Duration: 4 weeks (100 hours)
Aim:
Foyle Language School will deliver a course leading to an English Language Proficiency Test which has been developed to assess Pilots and Controllers for licensing
purposes. The language course which has been specifically designed to comply with the principles and guidelines embodied in the Manual on Implementation of
Language Proficiency Requirements by ICAO.
Testing:
At the end of the course you will be assessed by means of a 20 min face to face interview with a qualified course rater to determine your level of proficiency
